Book Description from Amazon
The arrogant Duke of Trent intends to marry a well-bred Englishwoman. The last woman he would ever consider marrying is the adventuresome Merry Pelford—an American heiress who has infamously jilted two fiancés.
But after one provocative encounter with the captivating Merry, Trent desires her more than any woman he has ever met. He is determined to have her as his wife, no matter what it takes. And Trent is a man who always gets what he wants.
The problem is, Merry is already betrothed, and the former runaway bride has vowed to make it all the way to the altar. As honor clashes with irresistible passion, Trent realises the stakes are higher than anyone could have imagined. In his battle to save Merry and win her heart, one thing becomes clear:
All is fair in love and war.
Story Overview up to the First Kiss
At the beginning of the story Trent kisses Merry at a ball and decides she would be the perfect wife for him, but later finds out she has already agreed to marry his brother, Cedric. Merry has previously been engaged twice but ended the engagements after coming to dislike the men involved.
The story progresses to where these two characters get to know each other through their relationship to Cedric and they each come to care for the other. Trent is annoyed that Merry is betrothed to Cedric as he feels Cedric isn’t worthy of her, but won’t upset their arrangement. Merry is attracted to Trent and they get on well together; she even enjoys his company more than that of her fiancé, whom she finds tiresome at times. As this is her third engagement she is determined this time to go through with the marriage.
While at a social gathering Cedric becomes drunk and insults the hostess, whereby Merry, having had enough of his ill-mannered behaviour, ends their betrothal. Cedric is also rude to Merry which embarrasses her so she leaves the dinner table and Trent follows her.
Merry wants to leave the ball because she is embarrassed by the disgrace of ending her betrothal and feels that everyone is watching her but she needs to find her aunt first before she’ll be able to leave. Trent leads her away and whisks her into a room off the corridor.
The scene where the Duke of Trent and Merry have their first kiss happens right in the middle of the book. The following excerpt is quite long as the lead-up to the actual kiss starts when Trent pulls Merry into his lap. The resulting conversation sets the intimate scene, showing you some of each character’s personality, until they finally have their kiss.
Story Excerpts (taken from pages 198–209)
Chapter Seventeen
The chamber they found themselves in was quite dark, save for what little light was emitted by a fire burning low in the hearth; Lady Vereker had no doubt left the lamps unlit in an effort to discourage her more adventuresome guests from straying into the private chambers.
